The Arusha Mental Health Trust was founded in 1996 on the streets of Arusha; it grew out of a great need to offer basic mental health care to this growing population. At that time there were no active mental health services available. Dr. Sheila Devane (Our Founder) works under the auspices and with the agreement of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).
Whilst we remain connected by friendship, tradition and gratitude to MMM and are mutually supportive, the program became a Company Limited by Guarantee in Tanzania in 2004 and a Registered Trust in 2006 and is now legally autonomous.
